In Texas, in the winter, we have days of gloom and days of sun. It can be 70 degrees one day and 25 degrees the next. It is hard to keep up with the roller coaster weather. I do love a dark, rainy day, from time to time, but if I have too many gloomy days in a row, I start craving the sun. I have friends in Manchester and London, and in Portland, who get way more gloom in the winter than the sun, and I feel for them. So how do you obtain sanity and happiness in the dread of winter? How will refreshing your home décor help you feel bright and joyful inside while it is gloomy outside? Here are eight easy ways to bring the gloom meter down and freshen up your spirits. Candles When it is rainy or grey outside, I like to light a lot of vanilla candles. The light, fresh smell, along with the flicker of light, makes me feel happier and brighter. You can use any flavor you like, but a light flavor that smells clean and fresh, like vanilla or citrus, will help you lighten your mood. You can also use oils in a defuser, preferably a defuser with nice light. Light your candles! Don’t let them collect dust. You bought them because you thought they smelled nice, so use them. They will brighten and refresh your winter home. And your mood. Open your curtains! I am slowly removing the blinds in our house. I have removed blinds in the dining room and my office, and I want to remove them in our breakfast nook next. I don’t like blinds any longer. The sun looks prettier shining through the window with no blinds. I bought new sheer curtains, and I now love my windows. When it is sunny, the light pours in and warms my mood. The new curtains did not cost a lot either. I have bought linen curtains at Marshals and Tuesday Morning. For my office, I purchased a curtain rod and linen curtains for under $30. This is an economical way to let more light in your house. White Sales January is full of white sales. The stores know we are searching for a refreshing look in the new year. In the winter. Take advantage of these sales and buy some new sheets for your bed to produce a new look. Add some pretty pillows. And, don’t forget to open those curtains and let the light in, even if it is dreary out. And, make your bed daily. My mother was right; it makes my room look 100% better with a made bed. Fresher, prettier, and yes—better. These are easy ways to refresh your bedroom and refresh your mood. When my house looks fresh and clean, it feels prettier. And that makes me smile. Shop Your House In your family or living room, easy refreshes can be as simple as a new throw blanket and pillows. Pillows and throw blankets, on a bed or a couch, are like jewelry. It makes the outfit, right? That’s what pillows and blankets do for a room. I have discovered pillow covers. You can change your pillows, for your couch or bed, easily and economically by using pillow covers. My favorite places to buy pillow covers are from H&M Home, Target, Pottery Barn, and Studio Pillows (an Insta-friend of mine in Austin! Home-sown, home-designed, and the quality is amazing!) https://studiopillows.com/ Or, shop your house. Take the pillows off your bed and try them on your couch. Switch it up for a new look. In my house, every room has grey as an accent or the main color. This makes it easy to rearrange and shop my house. Sometimes placing a piece of furniture or accent piece, or even a pillow, in a new room makes a huge difference. January is the perfect time to rearrange and redo your décor. You don’t have to buy new things; you can shop your house. The Christmas tree is gone, so when you are putting your house back together, switch it up, rearrange your furniture. I promise this is a great way to brighten and refresh without spending a dime. Add mirrors Mirrors or any glass décor reflect light and make the room appear brighter. My living room and den are my darkest rooms in my home. I use a lot of mirrors and even more glass bottles and vases to reflect what little light there is all around the room. Try mirrors, it will help brighten the room, and nothing is prettier than a mirror. Deep Clean and Organize January and throughout winter is the perfect time to deep clean and organize. You can’t be outside when it is freezing and miserable, so cleaning your house is a way to refresh. It is no fun, but afterwards, you enjoy the benefits of a clean, organized home. https://www.dedradaviswrites.com/practical-home-improvements-that-will-make-your-home-happier/ I have a goal of cleaning out several of our closets this winter. Getting started is the hard part. But when you open that closet door and it is straight and organized, it makes me smile. Am I the only one? Plants Another way to brighten and refresh any room is to add plants. Fresh or faux. I use greenery in all my rooms. The plants make the room come alive. Bring the outdoors in and make your home cheerier and more welcoming. Breathe some life in your house with plants. Live plants are good for us, too. If your room has low light, research plants that thrive in low light. I recommend The Sill. You can follow them on Instagram or go to their website. https://www.thesill.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA68bhBRCKARIsABYUGifOeSGKLKub5qYYb2VnrTyp9YupVwl0GjeiTTttGubmshjpMtg8WskaAobUEALw_wcB They are a great source for all things green. They also deliver live plants to your front door. https://www.dedradaviswrites.com/pre-spring-decor-brightening-more-than-just-your-room/ I also use a lot of faux plants in my darker rooms. I list my favorite places to buy the non-living plants here. Sometimes, faux is the better choice. Live or faux, plants will bring your room to life and help your home fell well, homier. Brighten and refresh your home any time of the year with live or faux plants. Fresh Flowers Another way I bring life to my home, and bring a smile to my face, is fresh flowers. I always have flowers in my kitchen. They truly make me happy. I buy a bouquet at the grocery store every week. In fact, it is my reward to myself for going, because I dislike the grocery store. It is a chore, so why not a reward? My store has flowers that are inexpensive, along with the flowers that are pricey. I believe all flowers are pretty. Try some simple daisies. They will make you smile. They will make your home feel less wintery. Another easy way to add flowers to your winter décor is by forcing bulbs. I wrote a blog post in December on forcing paperwhites. I am enjoying them now in January. Forced bulbs today will give you pretty flowers next month. And I happen to enjoy the growing process. https://www.dedradaviswrites.com/paperwhites-easy-decor-throughout-the-winter/ Everyone gets the winter blues and craves the sun. Brighten and refresh your winter home with these simple and easy ideas, and then smile. Spring will be here before we know it. I hope for you lots of sun. I also hope for you a refreshed, bright home that makes you feel bright and happy as well.
