January is a diet of all things after over-indulging during the holidays. Too much merriment. Too much shopping, buying, decorating, baking, eating and drinking.

 

January is a do-over. A reset button. A clean slate. The new year is a new you. A brand new pretty planner. January is the time to begin again.

January is to resolutions like February is to failure.

Like most people, every January, I make New Year’s resolutions. Usually for me, it is weight loss related. I lose the same December slash Christmas pounds every new year. And then I quit. Sometimes by February. Sometimes by the spring.

January is to resolutions like February is to failure

The bottom line is I never follow through with the aspirations I set for myself.

Actually, I can’t say never.

One year, about five years ago, I set a different goal for myself. I decided I would read the Bible from page one to page 1939. I started the second day of the year. I had a daily bible that had several verses, a synopsis (that I could understand) and a prayer. Although it took me fourteen months, not twelve, I did it! And—I enjoyed it.

I was so proud of myself the entire year I was following through with my resolutions. Most people who knew me knew I was reading the Bible as my new resolution. When I finished, I was so proud of myself. I learned so much, was closer to God, had a more powerful prayer life and I completed a large goal I had set for myself.

When I read the bible, even though it took me longer than one calendar year, I succeeded in the first, and only, New Year’s resolution I had made for myself. I did not quit.
