Don’t depend on others to make you happy. Only you can make you happy. Only you can choose to be happy.Don’t depend on others to make you happy. Only you can make you happy. Only you can choose to be happy. #write31days Click To Tweet
My parents used to tell me as a child, when I was most likely being a brat, “You better put a smile on your face.” I don’t think that ever worked. I think that simply made me madder. In the end, I always returned to happiness, I just had to do it on my terms.
What makes you happy?
I have a long list of things that make me happy; make me smile. You will learn about thirty-one of those things in my writing challenge–if you follow along. “I don’t think there’s anything on this planet that more trumpets life like the sunflower. For me that’s because of the reason behind its name. Not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun. During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky. A satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it. And that’s such an admirable thing. And such a lesson in life.” Smart, enlightening words by Helen Mirren.
Vincent Van Gogh liked sunflowers. He even took credit for them. “The sunflower is mine, in a way.”
The smallest things warm the heart. And sunflowers do that for me.
Coming home from Lubbock, last year, after Cameron graduated from Tech, we saw a large, sunny field of sunflowers. We pulled over, got out and took the silliest, most wonderful pictures.
That made me happy. Pictures with my girls make me happy.
Helen Keller had the right idea when she said, “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows. It’s what the sunflowers do.”
Yes, there are much prettier flowers out there. After all, sunflowers don’t smell up a room. But they are bright and lovely.
